Jack Poole gave multiple presentations on May 3rd at an event sponsored by NOTIFIER (Honeywell). It was sixth of a series of eight such seminars being offered around the country.

The first presentation was about Mass Notification & Emergency Communication Systems (ECS). Poole told his seminar audience, which included fire dealers, engineers and some end users, that the "market-rich environment for mass notification" is not just college campuses and the military but also corporate campuses and manufacturing facilities. He also discussed potential threats ranging from a gunman in the building to an accident at a nearby chemical facility.

The second presentation was about Determining intelligibility of Emergency Messages. Poole told his seminar audience that the traditional way of deciding whether an emergency message is intelligible is pretty simple. "We all stand around with the fire marshal or AHJ or whoever it is and we play back the message and say, 'Hey, did you understand it?'" said Jack Poole of Olathe, Kan.-based Poole Fire Protection. But now, he said, new technology to test for intelligibility—intelligibility meters—and new standards have made designing for intelligibility more complex.
